LABOR is a private Contract Research Organisation (CRO) realising third party research anddevelopment, specifically in the energy and environment sector. In particular it realises researchactivities and coordination in the framework of multi-partner research projects. The University of Rostock founded in 1419 is the oldest university in northern Europe with presently15,000 students. The University Medicine is incorporated in the University of Rostock and comprisesthe full range of patient care, connected with a long tradition of education and research. TheDepartment of Orthopaedics hosts its own Biomechanics and Implant Technology ResearchLaboratory with a staff of 23 people engaged mainly in musculoskeletal research. Biomedical,electrical and mechanical engineers are working together with clinicians, biologists, technicians andstudy nurses on a wide range of basic and -due to the close input of the clinic- applied science projectsas well as clinical studies. The research laboratory is financed mainly by third-party funds which areraised from the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - German Research Foundation), the Germangovernment (Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Federal Ministry of Economics andTechnology), the federal state government (via EFRE/EFS) and smaller research foundations. Asignificant share of funding is also realized by industry projects, mainly in cooperation with medicaldevice manufacturers.
